Profit in business comes from repeat customers, customers that boast about your project or service, and that bring friends with them. Business, that's easily defined - it's other people's money.
Strike Back at People Who Mess With You
Life is full of jerk-offs who love to mess with people, especially if that person is successful. I think it comes down to either two things, jealousy or greed, or a combination of the two. And sometimes there’s no money involved., as Donald Trump says, “They just do it for sport.”
The world is full of bad people who get off on being mean and nasty. Sure there are plenty of good hearted people who act in good faith. Always strive to be one of those people. But no matter how good you are you will frequently encounter people who are downright evil– in business, in the company you work for, in the government, even in your very own neighborhood. If you are doing badly, they will celebrate. If you are doing well, they’ll get jealous and try to take it from you.
Bill Zanker, Founder and CEO of The Learning Annex relates a poignant story from his life, “One time a company came out with a complete knock-off of the Learning Annex and started promoting it directly in competition with me in New York City. He was basically stealing our customers.
I sent him a letter asking him to stop ripping us off. He refused, so I immediately sued in Federal Court for copyright violations and trademark infringement. When we went to court, the judge asked him if he wanted to settle out of court. He said ‘no.’ So the judge ruled in favor of us and set the fine so high that he couldn’t pay it and had to go under. I felt very good about this. You’ve got to go after people that mess with you.
And persistence is crucial. My whole company was at stake. I couldn’t lie down and just take it. I had to fight back. I saw the fight all the way to the New York Court of Appeals, highest court in New York. I kept fighting until I won. Never stop until you get even.”
You can’t let evil people get their way. You’ve got to stop them in their tracks, and make them pay of their wrong-doing. It seems to make a lot of sense to let the little things go by. After all you’re got to pick you battles. But watch out for people who cross you in small ways. If you let them get away with small transgressions you may be encouraging them to escalate.
Maybe they are testing you to see how you’ll react. If you concede small victories now, you could end up later on being challenged to the core an issues that are critical to your very survival. As Bill Zanker says, “I always get even with people who cross me, even in small ways. Sometimes I don’t strike back right away. But I bide my time, and when the opportunity arises I don’t hesitate to strike them hard.”
Economic depression cannot be cured by legislative action or executive pronouncement. Economic wounds must be healed by the action of the cells of the economic body - the producers and consumers themselves. One more thing is in the business world, everyone is paid in two coins: cash and experience. Take the experience first; the cash will come later. Remember, a business that makes nothing but money is a poor business.
